Allowing your mind to follow your body - usually we think of it as the other way around, if at all.
The other day I was at a yoga class feeling very uptight and stuck in my mind. Each breath and position was a task and I found myself dreading the next step as my mind fell into a dull melancholy.
Then something amazing happened. We were asked to sit on the ground with our legs slightly apart and do a simple bend forward onto the ground. As I stretched my hands out I felt my entire body melt fully to the floor - unfolding completely into the stretch, a feat I have not accomplished in years!
The instant my head, chest and abdomen unfolded completely on the floor I felt my mind open up as well. I got a rush of energy through my system and it cleared my thoughts and stretched me out of my rut.
For many years of my life I studied and adored dance. I tend to be a very contemplative and heady person but when I was on the dance floor, in the studio, on the barre or on stage, my mind was still - no not quite still but calm and quiet; quiet in the way a small running brooke or creek is quiet.
To feel again the connection between the movement, space and unfolding of my body to my mind was more rewarding than merely feeling good about a great stretch. It was a reminder that whenever we are stuck or dull or stagnant it may be that our bodies are sending us messages to get up and move!
Allow your body to fully occupy the space you are in - extend your body to the brink of all her beautiful dynamics - fold and unfurl your self and you may be surprised to find your thoughts following suit.
